Ignoring risk management is how large losses begin.
Sometimes it ends with liquidation.
Sometimes it ends with debt.
The market eventually punishes traders who treat survival as optional.
Paul Tudor Jones once summarized his priority clearly:
“Don’t focus on making money. Focus on protecting what you have.”
That is the real purpose of risk management.
Risk management means deciding how much damage you are willing to accept before entering a trade.
It includes:
• Position size
• Stop-loss placement
• Leverage
• Maximum risk per trade
• Total portfolio exposure
• The conditions that invalidate the setup
Its purpose is not to eliminate losses.
Losses are part of trading.
Its purpose is to prevent one wrong decision from becoming financially destructive.
A trader can survive several losing trades when every loss is controlled.
But one oversized position, one leveraged trade without a stop, or one emotional attempt to recover losses can erase months or years of progress.
Before entering any trade, I now ask:
How much can I lose?
Where is my idea proven wrong?
Is my position size appropriate for the stop distance?
Can my account survive several consecutive losses?
Would this loss affect my next decision emotionally?
Practical risk management may include:
• Risking only a small percentage of capital per trade
• Placing stops based on market structure
• Reducing position size when volatility increases
• Avoiding excessive concentration in one asset
• Never borrowing money to recover trading losses
• Never widening a stop just because the loss feels uncomfortable
Without these rules, the process often becomes predictable.
A small loss becomes averaging down.
A failed trade becomes revenge trading.
A losing week becomes higher leverage.
Eventually, the trader is no longer managing the position.
The position is managing the trader.
Risk management will not make every trade profitable.
It does something more important:
It keeps you in the market long enough to learn, improve and compound.
Your first responsibility is not to maximize profit.
It is to make sure one trade cannot end your journey.
