ByteDance’s “most loyal” US investor withdraws, turning a 15k倍 profit on its ByteDance investment
In the history of global venture capital, most wealth-boom myths are hard to replicate—but this ByteDance investment with a 15kx return has yet to be surpassed to this day.
Recently, foreign media The Information confirmed a major industry development: ByteDance’s earliest and most core angel investor in the ecosystem—US SIG Haina International—has officially withdrawn completely from China’s VC market. This longtime foreign firm, which has focused on China for twenty years and backed hundreds of high-quality projects, has shut down its domestic venture investment business entirely and said goodbye to the China market.
The most dramatic part is that SIG’s exit came after 2012, when it held one of the most outrageous wealth myths in China’s venture capital history. In 2012, SIG invested only $6 million to bet on ByteDance in its early startup stage. At its peak, its on-paper gains exceeded $90 billion, and the investment return reached as high as 15kx.
In 2012, ByteDance’s Series A round valuation was only $9 million—a niche project the industry largely ignored. No one expected that, thirteen years later, it would grow into a global super-giant valued at $15k.
Over thirteen years, ByteDance’s valuation surged nonstop, creating a venture capital miracle unmatched worldwide:
Valuation of $500 million in 2014; rising to $11 billion in 2016; reaching $75 billion in 2018; breaking the $15k mark in 2020; and strongly surpassing $600 billion by the end of 2025.
At its peak, SIG held about 15% of ByteDance’s shares, with an on-paper market value surpassing $90 billion. The $6 million principal turned into a 15,000x gain—this explosive set of numbers directly topped the global VC history record, with no precedent and few prospects.
This god-tier investment directly propelled SIG’s core circle and maximized the wealth-creation effect. Co-founder Arthur Dantchik’s net worth surged by $6.5 billion; soul figure Jeff Yass, through indirect shareholding, saw his net worth surpass $59 billion, taking the No. 1 spot among the richest people in Pennsylvania, USA.
