Tether’s gold-backed token Tether Gold (XAUT) has officially obtained ADGM certification as an “Accepted Spot Commodity.” This means that, within this financial hub, regulated financial institutions holding the necessary approvals can legally provide services involving XAUT.

This comes after ADGM previously accepted Tether’s USD stablecoin USDT as an “Accepted Legal Reference Token,” and now Tether has further expanded its regulated product lineup at one of the Middle East’s largest international financial centers.

Abu Dhabi certification upgrades XAUT’s status

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said that this certification lays a clearer path for regulated institutions to provide XAUT services. ADGM added that it will support business growth through expanded products and services across the financial center.

According to DefiLlama data, the total value locked (TVL) of Tether Gold has grown by more than three times over the past year, rising from about $826 million to about $2.86 billion.

According to RWA.xyz statistics, the distributed value of tokenized commodities is about $4.46 billion, accounting for nearly 13% of the $34.73 billion tokenized real-world assets (RWA) market.

XAUT isn’t just for trading—it can also be used as lending collateral

Tether Gold’s use cases are also continuously expanding. In June this year, Bitcoin lending platform Ledn announced plans to include XAUT as a borrowing collateral asset later this year, allowing customers to directly borrow funds backed by tokenized gold without needing to sell the gold tokens they hold.

The wave of tokenized gold

This certification for XAUT reflects a broader trend: Middle East financial hubs are actively embracing tokenized assets. By incorporating XAUT as a spot commodity, Abu Dhabi provides a more explicit regulatory framework for traditional financial institutions handling tokenized gold.

For Tether, this is not only a brand endorsement—it also means that XAUT’s infrastructure in the Middle East market is in place. As more regulated institutions join in the future, XAUT’s liquidity and use cases are expected to further expand.
