AI search is killing an old rule of the internet
In the past, search engines took website content, then sent users back to the site.
Now, AI takes the content and leaves the answer right in the chat box.
A recent study found that, in its analyzed sample, only about 5.2% of ChatGPT conversations led to clicks outside the site.
Users get the answer
But creators, media, and websites don’t get traffic
This means the exchange rules of the internet over the past twenty years are changing:
Websites provide content for free, search engines handle distributing traffic, and ads and subscriptions keep creators afloat.
AI search breaks that cycle
It reads the whole internet, but it doesn’t necessarily send users back to the original content source.
The most dangerous thing in the future may not be “AI replacing search engines.”
It may be:
AI becomes the biggest entry point to the internet, but content producers get no return.
When every answer stays inside AI, how many people will still be willing to keep creating content for free?
