A transaction in which Polymarket bettors placed a bet on JD Vance in 2024 has recently been dug up by U.S. regulators.
Because the bettor might have received the answer in advance from a member of Congress.
Before former President Trump officially announced that JD Vance would be his running mate, Florida Republican U.S. Representative Anna Paulina Luna allegedly said she already knew the nominee while having dinner at a private club in Tampa.
A person present told The Wall Street Journal that Luna then said she had already shared the news that Vance was going to be selected ahead of time with the MAGA influencer D.C. Draino (real name Rogan O’Handley), so he could place a bet on Polymarket.
The other party is said to have nailed it. Luna later even joked about him: Why didn’t you bet more?
The Polymarket market for the Republican vice presidential nominee candidate ultimately saw total cumulative trading volume of about $92.6 million, with the JD Vance option alone accounting for about $6.45 million. As for how much O’Handley specifically bet and how much he made, it has not been disclosed.
The report says the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission has launched an investigation into this lead. Both Luna and O’Handley deny the claims.
Luna’s response was also very Washington in style: “I’m honored that The Wall Street Journal thinks I can read minds—too bad I can’t.”
Media people make big money off inside information, and only your humble editor is still earning hard money 😭.
