Why Hyperliquid’s HIP-4 Upgrade Matters for Prediction Markets

Prediction markets have grown quickly over the past year, but many still operate as separate applications with their own liquidity and trading systems.

Hyperliquid’s HIP-4 proposal takes a different approach.

Instead of building prediction markets as a separate application, HIP-4 would integrate them directly into HyperCore, Hyperliquid’s Layer 1. This means prediction markets would run on the same infrastructure that already supports trading on the network.

One of the main features of HIP-4 is its use of Hyperliquid’s native Central Limit Order Book (CLOB). Unlike many on-chain prediction markets that rely on automated market makers (AMMs), a CLOB allows users to place limit and market orders, offering a trading experience that is familiar to many exchange users.

Another key feature is cross-margining.

If implemented, traders would be able to use the same collateral across perpetual futures and prediction markets instead of locking separate funds for each market. This gives users more flexibility in managing their capital across different positions.

HIP-4 also introduces a 500,000 HYPE staking requirement for anyone who wants to create a prediction market. The proposal uses this staking requirement as an economic threshold for launching new markets.

What stands out to me is that the proposal focuses on infrastructure rather than simply adding another product.

Prediction markets need liquidity, efficient order matching, and reliable execution to scale. HIP-4 is designed to bring these capabilities directly into Hyperliquid’s core trading infrastructure instead of relying on external applications.

If HIP-4 is implemented successfully, it would expand Hyperliquid beyond perpetual futures by adding prediction markets to the same Layer 1 trading environment. That could make it easier for different types of on-chain markets to share the same liquidity and execution engine.

Whether this approach becomes widely adopted will depend on how developers and traders use the new infrastructure after launch, but it highlights how blockchain platforms are evolving beyond single-purpose applications.
