Apple: Could We Be Heading Towards an AI Resurgence?
The Nansen CEO doesn't seem to think there's been too much water under the bridge... Nansen CEO Alex Svanevik seems cautiously optimistic about Apple’s AI comeback.
While the iPhone-maker hasn't been one of the loudest participants in the AI gold rush, new commentary from the data platform’s CEO suggests a shift may be underway for a variety of reasons: the progress of Siri, the rise of edge AI, Apple’s considerable financial firepower, and the firm’s unparalleled ability to integrate hardware and software in a way few can.
‘It is in this particular field of edge AI where I find myself most fascinated.’ ‘Edge computing, also called edge AI, is the processing of information or data closer to where it is collected, rather than on a central server or cloud. Rather than having every user command sent back to Apple's servers, more computation would be pushed to the edge devices like iPhones and iPads themselves. This would make the technology both more responsive and improve on user privacy – both core to Apple's DNA.'
‘There’s also Apple’s financial might.
The company is awash in annual free cash flows, and that could help Apple afford massive investments in its silicon efforts, the R&D, or any other future products or strategies it desires. It's this kind of financial capacity which very few companies have.’ ‘And of course, the evolution of Siri can't be ignored.
While some consider the voice assistant the firm's weak point relative to its peers, future improvements can further cement Apple's hardware, software, and privacy ecosystem for years to come.’ But there needs to be a reality check here. The field is becoming increasingly competitive with virtually every major tech player now pouring money into the technology.
It will matter less how much innovation they bring and more about how much it enhances user experiences on existing and future devices.
In the meantime, I am confident in Apple's ecosystem advantage and believe in the combination of strong hardware, intuitive software, and a focus on user privacy, coupled with effective AI, this could give Apple a significant long-term runway of opportunity. Are you convinced that Apple can take on the leading roles in the AI revolution, or has it missed the boat already?
