Recently, there was a news item saying that international diamond giant De Beers announced it would suspend operations at its Venetia diamond mine in South Africa’s Limpopo province for two years.

How important is this mine? It is South Africa’s most valuable diamond mine, accounting for 40% of the country’s annual diamond production, operated for more than 30 years, directly employing 3,800 people, with 12k more livelihoods in the surrounding area tied to it.
The wording in the press release is very consistent, saying this is for “cost reduction and efficiency gains” and “enhancing operational resilience.” It sounds like a company just shuts a factory to get through winter—no big deal.
But I can only say this: the weight of this matter is much heavier than it looks on the surface.
De Beers isn’t shutting down just one mine—it is closing the price valve it has held for 138 years.
Once this valve is shut, it marks the formal entry of one of the most successful market-manipulation games in human business history into garbage time.
Today, let’s talk about how it played itself into this situation.

If a company lives purely by mining and selling, then it’s just a mining company, with no real difference from selling coal or iron ore. But De Beers is not.
De Beers’ real core competitive advantage is that it is the world’s largest diamond “warehouse administrator.”
What it extracts is only step one. The truly valuable move is locking most of the mined diamonds into a vault, then releasing them to the market—plan by plan, in rhythm, bit by bit.
In plain terms, it is the central bank of the diamond world.
Other central banks adjust the money supply to maintain the value of money—it adjusts
