In Singapore, even the mix of Chinese and English is considered mild—there’s also Malay, Hokkien, Fujian, Guangdong, Chaozhou, and Hakka…
This really does have to do with the environment: it’s not that you’re deliberately trying to act cool, or showing off English, or wanting to look professional. For example, in Singapore, really no one cares about this kind of thing; I believe in other parts of the world, people also have their own language habits.
Some people respect you when you speak formal Chinese fluently; and others “respect” your rojak literature—full of jumbled words.
The world is big enough to hold all kinds of people; the world is small enough that it can’t accommodate every person’s language habits.
