Cross-border arbitrage in virtual assets, especially using the kimchi premium, may look like it offers lucrative profits, but the risks are extremely high. This round of statistics shows that almost nobody can evade conviction; anyone trying to get rich off this should think it through, because a 99% conviction rate is basically a sure thing.

Nearly half the sentences result in suspended sentences, which suggests the court is not being especially harsh in cases like this. But the maximum prison term is 4 years, and the case value is in the trillions of Korean won—still, it feels a bit light?

Korean kimchi premium arbitrage has always been a gray area. This time, the data directly exposes the scale of illegal remittances between China and South Korea: 3.1 trillion KRW. A 99% conviction rate shows that regulators are cracking down hard, but the high proportion of suspended sentences also reflects the judicial standards—many participants may just be intermediaries. The maximum term is only 4 years; compared with the amount involved, doesn’t that feel a bit mismatched?

A 99% conviction rate—this data is brutal; it basically nails one out of every catch.
