Protests held by people in multiple cities across the United States against the unrestrained expansion of AI data centers

Golden Finance reported that on July 20, according to Reuters, led by the grassroots organization Humans First, at least 125 locations across the United States held synchronized protest activities on Saturday local time against the uncontrolled expansion of AI data centers and its infringement on people’s rights and interests in their daily lives. The protests focused on the cascading issues triggered by the construction of data centers. Despite strong backlash from residents, some local officials still signed confidentiality agreements with developers to approve projects in the absence of public oversight, leading to soaring community electricity bills, misuse of water resources, and worsening environmental pollution. Based on Reuters’ survey data released last month, only 33% of respondents believe that rapid data center construction is overall more beneficial than harmful, and only 14% support building data centers in their own communities. The organization put forward four core demands: ensuring that the development process is open and transparent, protecting local resources and the environment, allowing communities to share in development benefits such as high-paid union positions, and establishing a strict accountability mechanism to prevent developers from backing out of their commitments.
