Golden Finance News reported that on July 20, the global AI boom continued to sweep across the world. Korean media said that at a media roundtable at the Jeju Forum, SK Group chairman Choi Tae-won directly stated that next year global semiconductor demand will see explosive growth. In the AI sector, demand is expected to surge by 60%-100% compared with this year, while overall semiconductor product demand will also grow by at least 50%-60%. However, Choi Tae-won warned that next year the market’s new supply volume will be “almost zero,” and the supply-demand gap could widen further. He also described the current global memory chip supply-and-demand situation as virtually “a complete mess.”
He revealed that as global consortiums and tech giants compete to secure chip supply, companies are currently bearing large amounts of lobbying and enormous pressure. He emphasized that memory chip supply is no longer simply a business issue for companies, but directly related to national security. He pointed out that governments in each country must find ways to secure chips for their domestic companies in order to keep production running. He said that the current pressure mainly concentrates at the corporate level, but he believes that South Korea in the future may also face pressure from other countries.
