According to Yonhap News Agency, the Bank of Korea is advancing the “Han River Plan” second phase based on CBDC. If preparatory work is completed as scheduled, the actual trading test of deposit tokens could begin as early as September. The participating banks will increase from 7 to 9, with new features added including P2P transfers, biometric authentication, and automatic deposit token access and storage. The South Korean government will also push for using deposit tokens to issue subsidies for electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

The Bank of Korea is moving pretty fast with this action—both P2P transfers and biometric verification have been added. It feels like we’re one step closer to real-world deployment.

Using deposit tokens to fund electric vehicle subsidies is a great idea—it both promotes green commuting and tests the practicality of CBDCs, killing two birds with one stone.

The auto deposit and withdrawal feature for deposit tokens sounds great, but I’m curious about how security is ensured, especially for the biometric part.
