SPCX (SpaceX) in-depth market analysis
Subscriber Exclusive | July 20, 2026
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
1. Overview Summary
SPCX has been listed for only five weeks. Its share price has crashed from $225.64 to $123.99—down 45% from the high. Its market capitalization has evaporated by more than $1 trillion. It has already fallen below the $135 IPO price, and a six-day losing streak has set a new 52-week low at $122.12. Three major headwinds stack up: Starship’s 13th test flight was aborted due to an engine malfunction; an August lock-up release wave is approaching (44% of total shares can be sold); and short positions have surged to 29% of the float, with unrealized profits of about $4 billion. The three driving engines—Starlink (69% of revenue), rockets, and Grok AI—are still moving forward. The consensus target price from 33 analysts at $240 implies 93% upside potential, but the price-to-sales ratio is 99x, and the Q1 quarterly loss was $4.28 billion. Valuation disagreement is extremely polarized. This report breaks down the latest market situation, the logic behind the trend, and specific trade entry levels.
2. Real-Time Market Analysis
【Latest Data (July 17 close)】
Closing price: $123.99 (-5.43%) | New low: $122.12 | 45% pullback from the high
Trading volume: 83.7 million shares | Trading value: $10.47 billion | Market cap: $1.62 trillion (more than $1 trillion evaporated)
【Characteristics of the Six-Day Downtrend】
On July 15, the price first fell below the $135 IPO price, triggering panic selling. On July 16, Starship’s 13th test flight was halted because 4 engines failed to start; the stock plunged more than 3% after the close. On July 17, it continued to drop 5.43% to $123.99, fully breaching the IPO-price support. Technically, the overall picture has deteriorated across the board: the stock price is below the 60-day moving average of $157.47 (a 21% deviation). MACD is bearish, and RSI is around 49.8, neutral to slightly bearish. The 2x short ETF (SSPC) surged 10.67% that day. The bond market weakened in parallel: the 30-year yield rose from 6.7% to 7.4%, moving toward junk-grade territory.
3. Trend Analysis
【Triple Negative Factors Weighing Down the Near-Term Trend】
First: Starship test flights have kept hitting setbacks. The 13th attempt was aborted because 4 engines did not start. Musk said the engines would be replaced and the test would be retried within days. A successful flight is the key confidence catalyst before the August earnings report.
Second: A wave of lock-up share releases is coming. Starting in August, about 1.2 billion shares will enter circulation (up 900%). From August to October, releases will occur in four batches, totaling 44% of total shares. Early investors have extremely low cost bases, so their willingness to cash out is strong. One fund manager put it bluntly: “Even if we conquer the Moon and find gold, there still won’t be enough money to absorb it.”
Third: Short positions have surged to 29% of the float. The value of the short position is $25 billion, with profits of about $4 billion. But heavy shorts also mean that any positive catalyst could trigger a short squeeze.
【Fundamentals: The Dual Narrative of Space + AI Is Still Moving Forward】
2025 revenue was $18.67 billion (+33%). Net loss was $4.94 billion. Q1 revenue was $4.69 billion (growth slowed to 15.4%), and the quarterly loss was $4.28 billion—almost matching the full-year figure. Free cash flow was -$9.07 billion. Starlink accounts for 69% of revenue; users are over 5 million, and direct-to-mobile connectivity is close to commercialization. The Colossus 2 AI engine contract is $45 billion, while Grok 4.5 pricing is only one-fourth of Claude—sparking a price war. Space Capital said that 2026 first-half space investment of $31.6 billion has already surpassed all of 2025.
【Institutional Views and Extreme Divergence】
Out of 33 analysts: 21 are strongly buy, 6 are buy, 5 are hold, and 1 is sell. The consensus target price of $240 implies 93% upside. Deutsche Bank targets $255 and Macquarie targets $250. However, Dan Ives warned that “valuation support is insufficient.” Gary Black said plainly that he would only be interested below $100. Michael Burry asserted that “the fundamentals cannot support the market cap.” Target prices range from $62 to $310—nearly a fivefold span. The early-August earnings report (expected EPS -$0.16, revenue about $6.87 billion) is the next critical validation window.
4. Recommended Trade Entry Levels
The following levels are based on technical-structure projections from the July 17 close of $123.99:
【Strategy 1: Bet on a Rebound from Oversold Conditions (High Risk)】
Trigger condition: Starship’s next test flight succeeds OR August earnings exceed expectations
Build/entry range: $120–$126 (staggered buys near the 52-week low)
First target: $135–$140 (reversion toward the IPO price)
Second target: $150–$155 (near the 60-day moving average)
Stop-loss: $115 (strict stop if it breaks below the new low)
【Strategy 2: Go Long on Breakout Confirmation (Relatively Steady)】
Trigger condition: Daily closes hold above $140 and volume expands continuously
Build/entry range: $140–$145
Target: $157–$165 (accelerate after breaking above the 60-day moving average)
Stop-loss: $132
【Strategy 3: Trade a Short in Line with the Trend (Follow-Through)】
Trigger condition: The rebound moves into the $135–$145 zone and then meets resistance and pulls back
Build/entry range: $135–$142
First target: $120–$122 (test the 52-week low)
Second target: $100–$110 (Gary Black target range)
Stop-loss: $150
Note: Short interest has reached 29%, so the risk of a short squeeze rises with any positive catalyst.
【Position Management Suggestions】
SPCX has extremely high volatility, with intraday swings of 5–8%. Keep total position size to no more than 15% of your capital. Suggested staged entries: buy 40% at the current price; if it pulls back by 5%, add 30%; after confirming the direction, add the remaining 30%. You must set a hard stop-loss—no “holding and hoping” with losing positions is allowed. The August lock-up release wave and the earnings report are the biggest variables. Before earnings, it is recommended to reduce exposure to below 5%. For options, you may consider selling $120 put options to collect premium, or buying August call options to bet on a rebound driven by earnings (note the extremely high IV). Leverage is not recommended.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
That’s this installment of SPCX Subscriber Exclusive analysis. SPCX is in the most severe testing period since its IPO: Starship setbacks, the lock-up release wave, and an assault by shorts combine into a three-layer negative catalyst stack—but the long-term space + AI narrative has not changed. $123 is the absolute low since listing, and the August earnings report plus the lock-up release wave will determine the medium-term direction.
