Bitcoin's Quantum Defense Takes Shape, but Satoshi's 1.1M BTC Remain Unrecoverable
A new proposal from Project Eleven could offer Bitcoin users a recovery path in a future where quantum computers can break today's cryptography, but it won't work for Satoshi Nakamoto's estimated 1.1 million BTC.
The solution builds on Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP 361), which suggests freezing quantum vulnerable coins and allowing legitimate owners to recover them using zero knowledge proofs instead of traditional signatures. The prototype reportedly generates proofs in just 243 milliseconds on a laptop and verifies them in around 40 milliseconds, making it practical without requiring a GPU.
The design takes advantage of modern hierarchical deterministic (HD) wallets introduced with BIP 32 in 2012. By proving knowledge of a parent key without revealing it, users could securely migrate vulnerable funds even after quantum capable computers emerge.
However, Satoshi's coins were mined before BIP 32 existed. Those early wallets have no seed phrase, parent key, or derivation path, making this recovery approach impossible for them. The same limitation applies to many pre 2012 dormant Bitcoin wallets.
The proposal remains an unaudited prototype and has sparked debate within the Bitcoin community over whether freezing vulnerable coins aligns with Bitcoin's principles. Even so, it marks one of the first practical attempts to address Bitcoin's long term quantum security challenge while preserving ownership for modern wallet users
