German Federal Chancellor Merz said on the 9th, when delivering a government statement in the Bundestag, that the U.S. government has approved the sale of long-range “Tomahawk” cruise missiles to Germany. The German government had previously reached an agreement with the U.S. side to procure and deploy this type of missile in Germany. According to Merz, this move will fill an “important strategic gap” in Germany’s defense sector. He did not disclose the specific timeline for the missile deployment, and also emphasized that Germany will continue to push for the development of autonomous European systems that can be deployed in Europe. Earlier, the U.S. government had announced plans to reduce the size of its forces stationed in Europe and to pause plans to deploy “Tomahawk” cruise missile units in Germany.
