Project Eleven announced it has developed a post-quantum scheme based on zero-knowledge proofs that allows users to prove they control the parent keys in the BIP-32 wallet derivation path, and bind the proof to a specific migration transaction to move assets after traditional signatures can be forged by quantum computers. Project Eleven said the implementation is about 16–60 times faster than the earlier scheme. The scheme depends on the BIP-32 structure, so it is not suitable for early BTC wallets from Satoshi Nakamoto or other wallets before 2012.

If a quantum threat truly arrives, this kind of approach can protect most of the assets in modern wallets—though it won’t be perfect, it’s at least a hopeful starting point.

The technical details are very hardcore, but ordinary users may care more about whether the migration process is beginner-friendly and easy to use. Hopefully, the project team can also release a turnkey tool afterward.

Zero-knowledge proofs plus post-quantum cryptography is indeed a clever idea, and a 16x improvement is certainly significant—but it remains to be seen when it can be implemented.

This solution only works for the BIP-32 structure, meaning that the early coins mined by Satoshi would be completely beyond saving once quantum computers arrive—kind of a shame.
