The chip sector suffered a continued sharp drop for the second consecutive trading day. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 1.0%, with a large weekly correction of nearly 7%.
NVIDIA (NVDA) closed down 2.2%, briefly giving up the top spot in U.S. market value at one point during the day.
Despite TSMC (TSM), a bellwether for chip demand, announcing stronger-than-expected profits and an expansion plan, market doubts surged over whether the cloud giants’ massive AI hardware investment can be quickly converted into commercial monetization. High-bar earnings expectations caused “good news being realized” to turn into “good news already exhausted.”
With the semiconductor sector’s weight in the S&P 500 having surged from 8% several years ago to more than 20%, its large intraday swings have produced a pronounced siphoning and drag effect on the broader market.
