John Chan: Hong Kong can provide about 180k PFLOPS of computing power by 2032, and the AI rollout has entered the system-level planning stage

Deep Tide TechFlow message: On July 19, Hong Kong Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po published an essay from the Chief Secretary, noting that artificial intelligence is moving toward applications at different levels, including embodied intelligence that goes from chat conversations to the physical world—shifting from the digital world to the physical world and permeating different aspects of daily life.

The Hong Kong AI+ and Industrial Development Strategy Committee has discussed key links such as scientific research and innovation, data flow and security, building computing power infrastructure, application scenarios, talent development, and capital investment. This signifies that Hong Kong’s AI plans have moved from step-by-step implementation into a phase of systematic layout. In terms of computing power, by 2032 Hong Kong will be able to provide about 180,000 PFLOPS of computing power—equivalent to 36 times the current total computing power in Hong Kong. Last year, of the funds invested by Hong Kong Investment Management Limited in various projects, 56% went into hard technologies, including AI, and it also promoted ecosystem development for the open-source RISC-V architecture.
