When SWIFT Confirmed Using Corda Settler That Supports XRP

An older video featuring a SWIFT representative has resurfaced after crypto researcher SMQKE highlighted it on X, renewing interest in the payment network’s past collaboration with enterprise blockchain firm R3.
The post noted comments by a SWIFT executive discussing the company’s partnership with R3 and the integration of SWIFT gpi with R3’s Corda ecosystem, while suggesting the development supported XRP through Corda Settler.
The video has prompted renewed interest because it references a real partnership announced in 2019. However, the relationship between SWIFT, R3, and XRP has often been interpreted differently over the years, making it important to distinguish the confirmed facts from broader claims circulating within the crypto community.
SWIFT Explained Its Collaboration With R3
In the video attached to SMQKE’s post, a SWIFT representative responded to a question about emerging technologies, including APIs and distributed ledger technology, and how they were influencing cross-border payments.
The representative explained that SWIFT had built APIs into its Global Payments Innovation (gpi) service that enables banks and corporate clients to integrate payment tracking directly into their own systems. He added that SWIFT was also using APIs to connect the gpi experience with distributed ledger ecosystems.
As part of that effort, the executive confirmed that SWIFT had partnered with R3, describing the company as a blockchain infrastructure software provider.
He stated that the partnership enabled R3’s Corda Settler to support SWIFT gpi, allowing blockchain-based environments to access SWIFT’s global payment capabilities.
He emphasized that the primary objective was not the technology itself, but improving the payment experience by reducing friction, increasing speed, and enhancing visibility for cross-border transactions.
Where XRP Entered the Conversation
SMQKE’s post linked the video to XRP because Corda Settler had previously introduced support for the digital asset. Before SWIFT announced its proof-of-concept partnership with R3, the software company had launched Corda Settler, an application designed to settle obligations using different payment mechanisms. XRP was the first cryptocurrency supported by the platform.
That technical detail has frequently led to claims that SWIFT itself adopted or utilized XRP. However, the partnership did not establish XRP as SWIFT’s settlement asset.
Instead, the proof-of-concept focuses on making users operate within R3’s Corda platform to initiate and track conventional SWIFT gpi payments. Those transactions continued to settle through SWIFT’s existing banking infrastructure using traditional fiat currencies rather than cryptocurrencies.
Community Reactions Continue
While such opinions remain common within the XRP community, the historical partnership itself should be viewed with context. The collaboration between SWIFT and R3 was real and publicly confirmed.
However, it served as an enterprise integration test connecting blockchain-based workflows to SWIFT’s established payment network. Although R3’s Corda Settler supported XRP as one settlement option, the initiative did not represent a direct endorsement or adoption of XRP by SWIFT.
