I just saw a post saying that the more finely modular components are split, the easier it is for indexers to “stutter,” and I suddenly found it pretty interesting.



Last week, for the hundredth time or who knows how many, I checked a protocol’s historical data—Subgraph spun for half a day with no response. Then I switched RPC nodes and it immediately started rate-limiting me. It’s basically that kind of thing: you want to see what happened on-chain, but it makes you experience the “waiting” feeling first.

Honestly, people are always hyping the data availability layer, but when you actually go to look up data, if any one of these links—indexer/Subgraph sync speed, or the RPC rate-limiting strategy—slips up, users end up with a complete blank on their end. Modularization sounds great when it’s being broken down, but where the composability isn’t shining is precisely those moments when everything “stutters.”

What developers get excited about is the architecture; what users are confused by is, “why is it gone again?” I don’t know how to fix it, but anyway, when I’ve been looking up on-chain data recently, my mindset has been trained: take a sip of water first, then hit refresh.
