🔥 Korea’s stock credit-book crisis: the structural collision between on-chain leverage and traditional markets
The Korea stock credit-book crisis is intensifying. The scale of forced liquidations in July has reached 344.2 billion KRW, KOSPI has plunged nearly 9% in a single day, and SK Hynix is down more than 15%. This is not just a domestic issue for Korea—on-chain, the SK Hynix contract SKHX has seen daily trading volume exceed $1 billion, funding rates have surged to as high as long pays short 0.06132% per hour, and the two giant whales are using 10x leverage to bet on the convergence of the price spread. The traditional market’s deleveraging cycle is being transmitted directly to the crypto market through tokenized stocks.
The core contradiction is this: Korea’s individual investors’ margin size and credit financing balance are continuously declining, and the market is trapped in a “stocks falling—forced liquidations—further declines” spiral. Meanwhile, on-chain leverage traders are using high-multiplier contracts to gamble on the spread between the SK Hynix ADR and Korean stocks. On one side is the drying-up of liquidity in traditional finance; on the other is a speculative frenzy in crypto—two markets are achieving an unprecedented connection via tokenized stocks, but they are also amplifying the speed of risk transmission.
Tante Macro notes that Korea’s current financial risks have structural similarities to the pre–1996 Asian Financial Crisis period: semiconductor exports account for 41%, foreign investors’ holdings of the stock market have hit a 40% historical peak, and external debt/GDP has risen to 39.6%. Although indicators like foreign exchange reserves coverage are better than at that time, both stock market valuations and financing balances are at record highs. If the semiconductor cycle reverses or foreign investors withdraw, the stock market could become a hub for risk transmission. And the existence of on-chain leverage means the crypto market is no longer a bystander.
Downside risk: the whale “convergent trades” on the on-chain SK Hynix contract appear to be arbitrage, but they actually expose the fragility of the tokenized market. Once the Korean government intervenes or the logic behind the price-spread convergence is broken, high-multiplier leverage could trigger a chain liquidation—similar to how the cascading effects of on-chain leverage during the 2022 Luna crash caught the entire market off guard. Current SKHX funding rates show that long positions face extremely high costs; if Korean stocks keep falling, long positions may be forced to close, further crushing prices.
