Anthropic's Sky-High Valuation Shows Just How Intense the AI Race Has Become The AI investment story just keeps getting larger, and Anthropic's reported $1.2 trillion valuation on the secondary market shows continued strong demand for the top players. Even more striking is the apparent unwillingness of current shareholders to sell, resulting in extremely tight availability even with that nosebleed valuation. From my perspective, this tells you how much investors believe in the long-term trajectory of AI: it's no longer viewed as a thematic trend, but as a foundation of virtually every industry, including healthcare, finance, robotics, security, and enterprise software.

This level of long-term conviction has led a truly staggering amount of capital into the sector.

On the flip side, it's always good to distinguish enthusiasm from value. A high-quality company can become a highly overvalued one, and once a company gets into this valuation stratosphere, performance is everything. Growth must continue at breakneck pace, revenue has to be robust, and product cycles must maintain their rapid rhythm. This is also a testament to the power of scarcity.

When prices are high and very few investors want to take money off the table, the valuation can stretch far beyond what most people would predict.

I’ve seen this pattern play out many times before. Ultimately the sentiment could prove correct or the market will demand a lot of sustained strength to back up these price points. For me the underlying message is clear: large institutions continue to flow into AI regardless of whether it is foundation models, chips, infrastructure, or enterprise solutions, and that has not abated.
