Who’s Your 2023 Women’s World Cup Champion?

This is who I’m backing: It gets more dramatic the closer you get to the World Cup Final and at this stage of the competition nothing feels guaranteed anymore. While just weeks ago most football fans and experts had a fairly concrete selection of who’s expected to lift the trophy, the knock-out stage has demonstrated once again how easily the narrative can flip with one moment of magic or a solitary error.

My pick to be crowned World Cup champion is still Spain.

The Spanish have played like the most well-rounded side throughout the tournament. From their well organised defense, to their control over the tempo in the midfield, to their ability to always find a way of staying calm under pressure, this Spain team embodies that most crucial quality of a championship winning side. And it’s often not the teams who play the most spectacular brand of football who will ultimately get over the line - it’s those who play smart football, which is exactly what Spain have done. Spain aren’t the only contender who are good enough though.

There have been some standout surprise packages like Norway who have shocked pretty much everyone and France still has the World Cup class match winners that could prove the difference, with England’s quality in their squad means they’ve got more than a chance of bouncing back from injury issues.

There’s just so much exciting football and variety being played at this level right now and it really keeps you on the edge of your seat because so many sides realistically have a chance. What I love about the Gate Square prediction events is how many different viewpoints are applied to analysing the tournament. The statisticians, the ones who believe in momentum and then just pure gut instinct.

And you know what – it isn’t always possible to determine one right answer and that’s what makes debating with the community so much fun. I’m going to remain with Spain for my World Cup predictions until proven otherwise in the final. If they don’t win the whole thing I do believe that Spain have shown all of the characteristics which have gone onto win a World Cup.
