Meta has finally started to seriously develop its own chips. The name Iris sounds quite ambitious. However, six weeks of testing without major issues is indeed something. $145 billion invested, 14GW of computing power by 2027. This pace is treating Nvidia as a backup plan.

Meta's self-developed chip Iris will go into production to reduce reliance on Nvidia
Coin World News: Meta plans to begin production of its next-generation self-developed AI chip, Iris, starting in September, aiming to reduce its dependence on Nvidia. The chip is designed by Meta itself, with Broadcom participating in development and TSMC handling production. Iris is part of Meta's MTIA series of self-developed accelerators, primarily used for AI tasks behind Facebook and Instagram. It will be deployed alongside GPUs from Nvidia and AMD but will not completely replace externally purchased chips. The Iris test took only six weeks and found no major issues. Meta also plans to launch a new chip every six months by the end of 2027. This year, it plans to deploy 7 GW of computing power, doubling to 14 GW by 2027, with AI infrastructure spending potentially reaching up to $145 billion. Self-developed chips can reduce costs and lessen reliance on external GPUs, but in the short term, they will still be unable to fully meet chip demand.
