US officials once worried that Israel might assassinate Iranian negotiators.

Coin World News reports, according to The New York Times, that during the secret negotiations between the U.S. and Iran this spring, American intelligence and diplomatic officials suspected that Israel might be planning to assassinate key Iranian negotiators, including Foreign Minister Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf. The U.S. feared such actions would directly disrupt the ongoing interim peace and ceasefire negotiations, and therefore issued potential risk warnings to Iran through regional countries. The report states that Israel had listed multiple Iranian high-level officials as targets early in the conflict, even including moderate figures originally involved in the negotiations. However, as the U.S. pushed for ceasefire and dialogue, Washington believed that targeting negotiators could lead to a resumption of war. Following April, the U.S. and Iran engaged in intensive contacts, coordinated by U.S. Vice President Vance, U.S. Middle East Envoy Witkoff, and Kushner. The report also mentions that Iran repeatedly strengthened security measures and used fighter jets for escort on some trips to prevent attacks on its delegations.
