United Nations Secretary-General calls on countries to strengthen artificial intelligence governance.
Jinse Finance reported that on July 1, at local time July 1, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said at the United Nations Headquarters in New York that the faster artificial intelligence develops in the absence of common rules, the smaller the influence that governments and people around the world can have on its outcomes. He called on governments not to wait and to strengthen AI governance.
At a press conference that day, Guterres said that a few months earlier, the United Nations announced the establishment of the “Independent International Scientific Panel on AI.” At a critical moment when gaining reliable and objective understanding of AI is more important than ever, the United Nations expects this panel to provide authoritative guidance and evidence. He said that the panel released its first assessment report that day, submitted the report to governments, and made it available to the public.
Guterres said that the report points out the prospects of AI technology. If used properly, AI could become the strongest engine for driving development, accelerating global progress in areas such as healthcare, eliminating hunger, learning, and climate. At the same time, the report also highlights the potential harms that AI may cause. (CCTV News)
