Kevin Hassett, Director of the U.S. National Economic Council, when asked in an interview whether the government plans to hold shares in OpenAI, said:

"We are in contact with all major AI companies to understand how they believe they can share benefits with the American people."

He also noted that the government's holding of Intel shares was driven by special circumstances, and "how frequently we will do similar things in the future remains an open question."

Previously, the Financial Times reported that OpenAI has discussed offering a 5% equity stake to the U.S. federal government to ease growing regulatory pressure. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes that allowing the public to hold company shares is the best way to share the benefits of AI.
