In marriage, a good match of social status really matters. Let me tell you two stories.

The first is about a colleague of mine who looks shifty-eyed. Before he became my colleague, he worked at Foxconn. By chance, he discovered that a girl on the assembly line was spending money lavishly. Looking at it, you could tell her family background was solid. Only after he learned more did he find out: the girl’s father was in animal husbandry, and he was very well-off.

Damn—this was a great opportunity to change his life. He wouldn’t let go and kept chasing her, and in the end he finally got her.

The first time he met the girl’s father, he brought a yellow box of Furongwang cigarettes. The girl found it and threw it away, saying it was too low-grade. The girl then paid herself to have it replaced with Zhonghua cigarettes.

In theory, he should have cherished the opportunity and been a decent, honest person. But when he went on business trips with us, he wasn’t honest at all. He bragged everywhere about how high his salary was. And after only a few days, he got involved with another girl who hadn’t even graduated yet.

Once the girl found out, she got on a high-speed train overnight to rush over and squeeze him dry. She also told him not to contact that girl anymore, and said that his previous mistakes would be wiped clean with that.

Later, I don’t know what happened between them. At that time, they weren’t married yet, so I don’t know whether they ended up getting married, or whether after getting married he became more honest.

The second story is about the richest man in the village’s daughter—the story of how she was exploited by a poor guy who climbed up the social ladder and then abandoned her. I’ll talk about that later.
