BlockBeats News, July 2—Google’s long-running battle with the European Union over a €4.1 billion (about $4.7 billion) antitrust fine ultimately ended in defeat. The EU’s top court, the Court of Justice of the European Union, ruled on Thursday that the regulators were right to punish the U.S. tech giant for abusing its dominant market position in the Android operating system.

The Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that Google’s appeal against the European Commission’s penalty should be dismissed. This ruling is legally binding and is a major victory for the regulator.

Since the first fine was issued in 2018, the EU has been litigating against Google in the Court of Justice of the European Union. In a statement about the ruling, the court said: “The Court dismisses the appeal brought by Google and its parent company Alphabet against the judgment of the General Court of the European Union, thereby confirming the penalty imposed on Google for abusing its dominant position in the market for Android operating system search services.”
