European optoelectronic semiconductor giant ams OSRAM has poached a top technical executive in the field of optical interconnects from NVIDIA, causing a strong shockwave in the photonics industry. This personnel change not only reflects the fierce competition in the AI data center optical interconnect track but is also seen by industry insiders as a significant signal that the VCSEL route is challenging silicon photonics technology.
M. Ashkan Seyedi recently announced on LinkedIn that he has officially taken the position of Vice President and General Manager of the Optical Interconnect Business Line at ams OSRAM. In his onboarding statement, he said that he will lead the team to advance the company's digital photonics strategy and create next-generation micro-emitter solutions for the AI data center market. Previously, Seyedi had long been deeply involved in NVIDIA's optical interconnect business and is widely recognized as a core technical figure in the industry.
This news quickly spread among the photonics professional community. The tech analysis account Irrational Analysis posted on X platform, stating, "If you work in the optics industry, you know who this person is and how significant this news is."
The same account also pointed out, "VCSEL CPO is gaining more and more momentum."

Seyedi's career spans multiple cutting-edge directions in optoelectronics.
According to his LinkedIn profile, he has long focused on integrated optical interconnects, dedicated to developing hardware solutions that meet bandwidth and power consumption requirements for modern hyperscale computers and data centers. He has also previously worked in fields such as solar cells, visible light communication, and sensing.
In his onboarding statement, Seyedi traced his technical roots—his doctoral research specialized in high-speed optoelectronic devices based on InGaAsP and GaN material systems, which are core material directions for VCSEL technology.
He expressed his anticipation for collaborating with ams OSRAM's world-class engineering team to transform the unique capabilities of these devices into practical products.
ams OSRAM is one of the world's leading suppliers in the VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser) field. The introduction of a top optical interconnect talent from NVIDIA is interpreted externally as a clear signal of the company's accelerated layout in the AI data center optical interconnect market.
VCSEL route challenges silicon photonics

Currently, co-packaged optics (CPO) is considered an important direction for solving the high-speed interconnect and energy consumption bottlenecks of AI data centers, while silicon photonics has long dominated the mainstream narrative in this track.
