On July 1, the Office of Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Labor reported that despite the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) taking measures to strengthen data protection after several key economic data leaks in 2024, further efforts are needed to prevent such incidents from recurring. The audit assessed three independent incidents, including the premature release of Consumer Price Index (CPI) data, delays in employment data publication, and the disclosure of statistical methods to only a select few individuals. The Office of Inspector General stated, 'In response to these incidents, the BLS has addressed vulnerabilities in information technology protection, revised performance standards, enhanced management oversight, updated policies and procedures, and conducted related training. However, we found that the BLS still has room for improvement to reduce the risk of improper disclosure of critical economic information.'
