OpenAI proposes offering 5% equity to the U.S. government to seek policy support.

On July 2, it was reported that OpenAI has initiated preliminary discussions with the U.S. government, proposing to offer approximately 5% of its equity to the government in exchange for the Trump administration’s support for the development of the AI industry and to help ease regulatory and political resistance. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes that allowing the public to share in the economic benefits of AI development is the best way to address the impact of AI, and has suggested that major U.S. AI companies each contribute about 5% of their equity into a public investment vehicle similar to the Alaska Permanent Fund, to be held by the government and benefit the public.
