Nikkei: Apple has raised its foldable iPhone shipment target and has not cut its iPhone shipment forecast for this year

- Apple is aiming to expand its market share amid component supply shortages, preparing at least five new iPhone models from the second half of 2026 through the first half of 2027, along with higher-than-expected foldable iPhone volumes. The company has raised its foldable production target from the previous 7–8 million units to around 10 million units.
- Apple has already reserved components for 80 million smartphones for its new products in the second half of 2026, and, leveraging its strong bargaining power, is targeting annual production of more than 220 million units.
- In contrast, Chinese vendors such as Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo have sharply cut their production plans to below 100 million units each this year due to severe memory and component shortages.
- Apple has instructed suppliers to stockpile some common components from the iPhone 17 series for the premium iPhone 18 series. In the first half of 2027, it plans to launch the base iPhone 18 model and a new iPhone Air.
- Technical issues related to the foldable hinge have been largely resolved, but mass production is expected around year-end. With memory price spikes already pushing up MacBook and iPad prices, maintaining supply-chain stability is seen as Apple’s biggest challenge this year.
