There's a saying my uncle taught me. He said at a dinner party, if someone puts you down in public and then immediately raises a glass and says, "Just kidding, bro, let me toast you, consider it water under the bridge," if you dare to touch that glass, you'll never be able to hold your head up in that circle for the rest of your life.

The first time I heard this, I had just graduated and went to a dinner party with my uncle. At the table, there was an old Liu who dealt in building materials. After a few drinks, he started making fun of my uncle, saying, "Old Zhang, you haven't been doing well these past few years. Back when we worked the construction sites together, you were the most capable. Now look at you." After saying that, he laughed first, and a few people at the table joined in. Then he raised his glass and said, "Just kidding, just kidding. Let me toast you, bro."

My uncle sat there with his hands under the table, still smiling, and just watched old Liu holding up his glass for a long time. The table gradually fell silent. Old Liu's smile slowly faded, and he didn't know whether to keep his glass raised or put it down. Finally, he said, "Alright, alright, I'll drink it." He downed it in one gulp, put the glass on the table, and never brought up that topic again.

On the way back, my uncle said to me, "When someone steps on you in public and then says it's a joke, he's not joking with you; he's testing how much you can take. If you pick up that glass, you're telling everyone he can keep stepping on you. Next time, don't ask why it's you again, because you allowed it the first time."

Later, I encountered a similar situation myself. A guy named Zhou, in front of about seven or eight people at a client dinner, said my proposal was no good. After that, he raised his tea cup and said, "Come on, come on, let’s use tea instead of wine. I spoke too harshly just now, don't take it to heart." My hand was under the table gripping my phone, the screen lighting up and dimming, but I didn't move. I just sat there looking at him. He held his cup up for a while and then drank it himself. For the rest of the meal, he didn't say anything nasty.

What do you all think? Should that glass be raised or not? $BNB
