The U.S. dollar index rose on the 1st. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major currencies, gained 0.2% on the day, settling at 101.39 in late trading. At the close of the New York foreign exchange market, the euro bought $1.14, lower than the previous trading day's $1.14; the British pound bought $1.33, higher than the previous trading day's $1.33. The dollar bought 162.53 Japanese yen, lower than the previous trading day's 162.62 yen; the dollar bought 0.8092 Swiss francs, higher than the previous trading day's 0.8083 Swiss francs; the dollar bought 1.42 Canadian dollars, higher than the previous trading day's 1.42 Canadian dollars; the dollar bought 9.73 Swedish kronor, higher than the previous trading day's 9.7 Swedish kronor.
