EU agency: Daily global sea surface temperature in June breaks historical record for the same period.

The EU's climate monitoring agency, the Copernicus Climate Change Service, and the "Copernicus Marine Service" jointly released a bulletin on July 1 stating that on June 21, the global average sea surface temperature broke the historical record for the same period. According to data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service, the global average sea surface temperature on June 21 rose to 20.86 degrees Celsius, higher than the 20.83 degrees Celsius recorded for the same period in 2023 and 2024. Data from the "Copernicus Marine Service" showed that on the same day, the global average sea surface temperature reached 21 degrees Celsius, 0.1 degrees Celsius higher than the records set in 2023 and 2024. The bulletin stated that this new ocean high-temperature record is related to the formation conditions of El Niño in the tropical Pacific Ocean. The World Meteorological Organization issued a bulletin on June 2 stating that, considering factors such as abnormally warm seawater in the tropical Pacific, the probability of an El Niño event occurring from June to August is 80%, and the risk of extreme weather in the coming months will subsequently increase. Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, said that the current situation may indicate that more temperature records are likely to be broken in the coming months. Over the past few months, abnormally high sea surface temperatures have been observed in multiple sea areas around the world. The bulletin warned that high sea surface temperatures may affect weather patterns, increase the risk of storms, extreme precipitation, and flooding, exacerbate sea level rise and ice melt, and put pressure on marine ecosystems, fisheries, and coastal economies.
