The widespread availability of low-interest financing and the cultural normalization of monthly payments have made car ownership feel instantly accessible, even when our salaries haven’t skyrocketed.Another factor is the changing nature of work and mobility. My father’s generation typically worked at a single company for decades, commuting via public transport or a company-proviced vehicle. Today’s gig economy, remote work, and frequent job-hopping mean that owning a car offers flexibility and a sense of control. For many of my friends, a car is less a status symbol and more a tool for independence — allowing us to travel, move between cities, or run small delivery businesses.Income alone doesn’t explain the difference. Adjusted for inflation, entry-level wages have stagnated, but the cost of entry-level cars has actually dropped relative to the past. Budget-friendly models, used-car markets, and electric micro-vehicles have lowered the financial barrier. Moreover, dual-income households are now the norm, so two salaries can support one car payment easily.Finally, parental support plays a role. In my circle, many parents helped with down payments — a practice almost unheard of in my grandparents’ time. This intergenerational wealth transfer, combined with financial products that reduce upfront costs, explains why so many of my generation own cars earlier than our parents did at the same age. It’s not that we’re more disciplined savers; we simply operate in a different economic and cultural ecosystem.
