Internal strife in the French team? Manchester City's €90 million star turns away and refuses to shake the coach's hand
In a high-profile match of the Round of 16 at the World Cup on July 1, the French men's football team defeated Sweden 3-0, advancing to the Round of 16. However, after the match, a controversial scene of discord between the manager and player emerged.
From the leaked video, it can be seen that French coach Didier Deschamps was shaking hands with each player during the post-match walk. He eventually approached Rayan Cherki to shake his hand, who directly turned his head away, ignoring Deschamps, and kept a sullen expression.
Deschamps noticed his discontent and when Cherki bent down to fix his shoes, he stepped forward again to comfort him. Yet, Cherki still refused the gesture, angrily brushing off Deschamps' hand and avoiding eye contact with him. With no choice, Deschamps had to leave dejectedly.
This seeming "internal strife" between the French team's manager and player sparked widespread discussion among netizens. Many fans criticized Cherki: "Are you worthy of showing off your attitude to the coach with such behavior?" "Do you really know your position in the national team?"
In the past season, Cherki delivered impressive performances for Manchester City. Wearing the No. 10 jersey, he recorded 10 goals and 15 assists in 52 appearances. His market value has also soared to €90 million.
However, during this World Cup, Cherki hasn't received much playing time. In all four matches played so far, he came on as a substitute, accumulating only 55 minutes of game time.
Deschamps is not deliberately targeting Cherki, after all, in the French national team, players like Michael Olise, Bradley Barcola, Ousmane Dembélé, and Moussa Diaby are ahead of Cherki, and they are all in excellent form. It would indeed be a happy "dilemma" to sacrifice any of them to give Cherki more playing time.
