CNBC: Some Companies Regret Layoffs Due to AI and Are Rehiring

According to monitoring by Beating, some companies that previously laid off employees citing AI have begun to rehire, as automation systems have failed to fully handle the related tasks. Analysts believe that cutting staff while increasing AI usage may not be the best path to drive business growth. Ford is one of the latest companies to adjust its direction. Ford is rehiring hundreds of experienced engineers to address quality issues that automation systems cannot resolve. Charles Poon, Vice President of Hardware Engineering at Ford, stated, 'AI is a very good tool, but its effectiveness depends on the quality of the information used to train it.' Commonwealth Bank of Australia and IBM have also emphasized human capital after layoffs and investments in AI technology. The Commonwealth Bank laid off over 40 customer service staff last year, replacing them with an AI voice bot, but the system could not meet demand, leading to an increase in call volume and the bank subsequently reversing its layoff decision. IBM had replaced some human resources functions with AI, which could handle about 94% of routine requests, but could not address the remaining 6%, including ethical dilemmas. IBM later announced plans to triple the hiring scale for entry-level positions in the U.S. by 2026. A report by Orgvue shows that 39% of business leaders have laid off staff due to AI deployment, with 55% admitting that the layoff decisions were erroneous. Data from Robert Half indicates that 32% of U.S. hiring managers reported canceling a position primarily due to AI, only to rehire for the same or similar roles afterward. Capitol Technology University noted that AI is changing the workplace, but companies are finding that human-machine collaboration is more valuable than complete replacement of human labor. (CNBC)
