BREAKING 🚨

Anthropic just dropped two announcements at once.
Claude Sonnet 5 is live today, and it is the most significant Sonnet upgrade Anthropic has shipped. It closes the gap with Opus 4.8 on agentic coding, browser use, terminal use, and multi-step reasoning, while launching at $2 per million input tokens, roughly a third of what Opus costs. It is now the default model for every Free and Pro user.
The version of Sonnet that ships today can do things that required Opus-class models just a few months ago. That is a meaningful shift in what developers can build at scale without blowing the budget.
Then there is the second story. The US government has lifted its export restrictions on Anthropic's most advanced models, and Fable 5, the model locked behind government controls since June 12, returns globally tomorrow.
Anthropic agreed to strengthen security safeguards and coordinate future frontier releases with Washington as part of the deal. The era of AI models being cleared for deployment one customer at a time, the same framework now applying to GPT-5.6, is settling in as the new normal.
The AI race just got a new compliance layer on top of it.
