Claude Login Emails Expose 'Invisible Location' Feature, IP-Based Location Raises User Privacy Concerns

On July 1, according to monitoring by Beating, Anthropic's AI assistant Claude has recently sparked discussions among users due to location hints in login verification emails. Some users noticed that when Claude sends login verification codes or security alerts, it includes a rough login location, such as country, region, or city. This detail has brought renewed attention to how AI service providers identify the source of user access. Such locations are typically not GPS precise but are inferred based on IP addresses, network connections, and device information. When using VPNs, proxy servers, corporate networks, or mobile carrier networks, the location displayed in the emails may not match the user's actual location. Anthropic's privacy policy indicates that the company collects IP addresses, device information, connection information, and location inferred from IP for security, fraud prevention, and enforcement of service terms. Claude users are particularly sensitive to this issue, partly because the service is not yet available in all regions, and cross-border usage, overseas accounts, and third-party relay services are relatively common in the Chinese community. Recently, there have also been reports in the Chinese user community of accounts being suspended or requiring re-verification, referred to by some users as a 'wave of account bans.'
