Sweden's "Historic Opportunity" — Meeting France for the First Time in the World Cup, Can They Create a Miracle?
Sweden and France have never faced each other in World Cup history. This is their first meeting in the World Cup.
Meeting for the first time means there is no historical baggage. Swedish players will not be afraid because "we have never beaten France," and French players will not be complacent because "we have never lost to Sweden." This is a pure "encounter battle" — whoever performs better on the spot will have the last laugh.
Although Sweden advanced as the third place in the group, they have never been afraid of strong teams in the knockout stages. In the 1994 World Cup, Sweden defeated Romania and Bulgaria to finish third. In the 2002 World Cup, they drew with England and Argentina in the group stage. Swedish football has a tradition of being "giant killers."
But tradition is tradition; the gap in strength is there. France is the biggest favorite to win this World Cup, and Sweden's reaching the 32-team tournament has already exceeded many people's expectations. Creating a miracle requires luck, requires France to make mistakes, and requires themselves to perform beyond their limits — the probability of all three conditions being met at the same time is really not high.
