Mars Finance News, June 30, according to the WSJ, insiders revealed that power struggles within Iran are threatening US–Iran peace talks: civilian leaders are seeking to unfreeze tens of billions of dollars in assets, while hardline military officials are pushing to gain control of the Strait of Hormuz. The civilian leadership, led by Iranian President Pezeshkian, aims to unfreeze billions of dollars to ease the hardships faced by millions of Iranians. However, other factions currently dominant in Iran’s political landscape, including the Revolutionary Guards, have different plans. The Revolutionary Guards intend to maintain complete control over this crucial strait at all costs, and plan to set up a lucrative toll-charging scheme that would both bolster the armed forces’ finances and allow them to shape the security situation across the entire region. The Revolutionary Guards have told the mediators that if they cannot secure guarantees in the Doha negotiations regarding Iran’s separate, sole control of the Strait of Hormuz, they will close the waterway again. In addition, the organization has demanded that the US and other countries abandon plans to allow ships to pass through the southern waters of the strait (near the Oman side).
