France’s “champion mentality” — a team that goes unbeaten in the group stage never eases up in the knockout rounds.

Only three teams won all their group-stage matches in this World Cup: the host, Mexico; the defending champions, Argentina; and France. France topped the group with the most goals (10) and the best goal difference (+6).

Historical data is highly favorable for France. In 1998, when France won the title on home soil, they also went through the group stage with a perfect record. Teams that finish the group stage unbeaten often carry strong confidence into the knockout rounds. There is a harmonious atmosphere within the France squad, the players are in top form, and Deschamps’ tactical system is mature. This “champion mentality” is something Sweden doesn’t have.

Although Sweden qualified, the process was anything but smooth. They finished bottom in the World Cup qualifiers with 2 draws and 4 losses, earning a spot in the playoffs only thanks to their UEFA Nations League performance. They secured a dramatic qualification only after winning consecutive playoff ties against Ukraine and Poland. In the group stage, they advanced again largely by luck. For a team that has been “extending its life” since the qualifiers, how long can it keep surviving in the knockout rounds?

Before the match, French media L’Équipe commented: “France are title contenders, Sweden are the lucky ones.” The remark may sound harsh, but it truly reflects the gap between the two teams. France winning and advancing is the most logical outcome.
