The 'Rotation Trap' of France — Is Deschamps' Lineup Tweak a Blessing or a Curse?

Pre-match reports indicate that Deschamps will make changes to the starting lineup for the match against Sweden. According to L'Équipe, there are two adjustments — Digne replaces Theo at left-back, and Barcola replaces Doué at left winger.

Digne may not match Theo in attacking ability and experience, but he is more solid defensively. Facing Sweden's Elanga and Isak, Deschamps likely values defensive stability more. Barcola replacing Doué is meant to enhance the attacking punch on the left — Barcola is faster and more direct in his dribbling, suited for counter-attacks.

But rotation also carries risks. The chemistry between Digne and Barcola with the main squad is certainly not as good as that of Theo and Doué. In a knockout match where one game decides everything, any coordination error could be fatal. Sweden's counter-attacks are extremely fast; if there is a communication problem on the left, Elanga is likely to seize the opportunity.

However, Deschamps has always been known for his prudence. He doesn't rotate for the sake of rotating; these two adjustments must have been repeatedly practiced in training. Moreover, France's squad depth is sufficient — 25 players participated in the final pre-match training session, with only Thuram (minor calf injury) absent. The strength of France's 'B team' may be higher than Sweden's 'A team'. The rotation is more a sign of Deschamps' confidence in the squad depth rather than a risk.
