MetaMask's newly launched Money Account represents a major step for stablecoins, transforming them from trading tools into everyday payment and wealth management instruments. This self-custodial account is built on the Monad chain, with mUSD at its core. User funds are automatically allocated to lending protocols like Morpho to earn a floating annual yield of approximately 4%, with Aave support to follow. Additionally, via the MetaMask Card, users can spend at Mastercard merchants, or conduct token swaps, perpetual contracts, and prediction market trading within the wallet. It integrates yield, payments, and trading while retaining self-custody. This means that stablecoins are no longer just a medium for on-chain transactions, but digital dollars with bank account functionality. Consensys founder Joe Lubin clearly stated that the goal is to drive stablecoins into everyday scenarios. However, risks also exist: the yield comes from DeFi protocols, posing smart contract and liquidation risks; users in the UK and EU cannot use it, and regulatory fragmentation remains an obstacle. Furthermore, as a new chain, Monad's security and liquidity remain to be verified. This could be an important step for stablecoins to move from speculative tools to everyday financial infrastructure, but there is still a long way to go.
