Why Norway Will Surely Trample Over Ivory Coast
In the early hours of July 1st Beijing time, the AT&T Stadium in Dallas will witness a knockout match destined to be bloody. Norway face Ivory Coast: Viking battle axes against African lions. On paper, their strength appears close, but my verdict is crystal clear: Norway will win the match 2-1 or 1-0, with Haaland scoring and Ødegaard controlling the whole game.
I know some will mention Ivory Coast’s comeback win over France in that friendly, but knockout matches and friendlies are two different things. Norway’s edge rests on three pillars that Ivory Coast cannot shake.
🔥 First pillar: Norway’s “big-game DNA” — a luxury Ivory Coast can’t even imagine
Ivory Coast has never won a match in the World Cup knockout stage. This edition is the first time in their team’s history that they’ve reached the Round of 16 knockout stage. The players in their squad have, on average, fewer than 5 World Cup appearances. What about Norway? Haaland, Ødegaard, Sørloth, Ryerson—these players have spent years battling week after week on stages of the Premier League, La Liga, and Champions League knockout rounds. They’ve been through life-and-death duels at Etihad, hellish away matches at Anfield, and suffocating moments in Champions League semifinals.
Knockout football has never been about who is younger or who can run more—it’s about who doesn’t make mistakes under high pressure. Those young men from Ivory Coast will, for the first time, feel the weight of “kick it away once and you go home” under the spotlights in Dallas, while the Norwegians’ eyes hold only calm—because they’ve long been accustomed to this kind of weight.
🔥 Second pillar: Haaland — a variable you can’t stop
You can say Ivory Coast’s midfield grind can sever the passing lanes for Ødegaard. You can say Kessié and Sangaaré can build a barrier. But no one can explain one thing: How do you stop a man who is 1.94 meters tall, whose sprint speed is comparable to a winger’s, and who can finish inside the box without needing any space at all?
Ivory Coast’s center-back pairing—N’Dicka is injured, Singo is in doubt due to a hamstring issue, and the defense is hastily assembled—has only one outcome against Haaland: getting crushed. When it’s a corner kick, Haaland rises high above everyone else, and defenders can only look up. When it’s a counterattack, Haaland accelerates at full speed, and defenders chasing from behind can only get left in the dust. He isn’t the kind of striker who needs teammates to feed him; he’s a monster who creates opportunities and ends matches himself.
Ivory Coast’s back line can’t last 90 minutes.
🔥 Third pillar: Norway’s “strategic saving of energy” — not luck, but tactics
In the final round of the group stage, Norway lost 1-4 to France, with Haaland, Ødegaard, and Nusa all sitting on the bench. Many people call it a disastrous defeat, but those who know understand—this was Solbakken’s careful calculation. France also needed to win their final group match to fight for first place, so Norway simply went along with it, rotated the entire starting lineup to keep their legs fresh for the knockout stage.
And what about Ivory Coast? All three group matches with full strength on the field, battling until the very last second in every game. With Kessié carrying the risk of muscle strain, the energy reserves of the midfield and defensive players have already been drained by the group stage. When the match reaches the 65th minute and then the 75th minute—when Ivory Coast’s legs begin to feel like lead—Norway’s fully fresh starters will deliver a fatal blow.
This is not luck. It’s a tactical crushing.
