#IranUSConflictEscalates This highlights the fragility of the 14-point ceasefire signed on June 17. The parties are blaming each other for the struggle for control of the Strait of Hormuz and ceasefire violations in Lebanon. Here are the striking details of the last 48 hours:
Key Developments:
• New US Attacks: The US Central Command (CENTCOM) struck 10 Iranian military targets in and around the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for Iran's drone attack on the Panama-flagged tanker MT Kiku. Targets included missile and drone depots, coastal radar stations, communication systems, and air defense positions. • Iranian Retaliation: The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched ballistic missile and drone attacks on eight US military facilities, including the Ali al-Salem base in Kuwait and the Fifth Fleet's Salman port in Bahrain, in response to the US attacks. The IRGC claimed that the targets were "destroyed" in the attacks.
• Harsh Threat from Trump: US President Donald Trump, in a statement on the Truth Social platform, stated that military operations against Iran could continue, saying, "There may come a point where we can no longer be reasonable and we have to finish the job we started militarily. If that happens, the Islamic Republic of Iran will cease to exist!"
• Tehran's Harsh Response: The IRGC described the US attacks as a violation of the ceasefire, stating that this would lead to "the complete cessation of all diplomatic processes" and that US bases in the region would "experience hell in the coming days." The Iranian Foreign Ministry also accused the US of "not adhering to the agreement."
The Reasons Behind the Events:
• Control of the Strait of Hormuz: At the heart of the conflict lies the struggle for control over the Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 20% of the world's oil supply passes. The US defends the southern route along the Omani coast, while Iran insists that ships use the northern route under its control and demand transit fees. According to Iran, the attacked ships were using unauthorized routes. • Lebanon Ceasefire Violations: Iran accuses the US of violating its commitment to maintaining the ceasefire in Lebanon as part of the agreement. Israeli attacks on Hezbollah are another breaking point for the ceasefire.
The coming hours and days will determine whether the crisis can be defused through diplomacy or escalate into a wider conflict. The key is the fate of the 60-day negotiation process.
