Mars Finance News, June 29 - Last Friday, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California received a class-action lawsuit against Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron Technology. The plaintiffs, including consumers and small businesses, accuse the three companies of violating antitrust laws by coordinating to limit the supply of traditional DRAM capacity, artificially creating a shortage and driving up prices. According to data cited in the complaint, these coordinated actions have caused commercial DRAM prices to rise by approximately 700% over the past four years, having a broad impact on global consumer electronics and commercial IT procurement. Apple's recent widespread price increases on iPads and Macs were cited by the plaintiffs as a typical case of price transmission: the supply gap created by the three manufacturers at the upstream level has been passed down through the industry chain, ultimately landing on end consumers. The legal arguments in this lawsuit are not without precedent. Samsung and SK Hynix formally pleaded guilty to criminal price-fixing charges filed by the U.S. Department of Justice in the 2000s, with the two companies paying a total of $731 million in fines and multiple senior executives sentenced to prison. The complaint cites this historical record to demonstrate to the court a pattern of systematic and repeated collusion by the three companies, thereby strengthening the credibility and legal force of the current allegations. Compared with defendants facing charges for the first time, this prior record provides the plaintiffs with a relatively strong reference basis and also raises the public and legal costs for the defendants' defense.
